This bill would update the tax code to ensure rural co-ops can retain their tax-exempt status when applying for disaster assistance from FEMA. Currently, co-ops risk losing their not-for-profit, tax-exempt status if they accept government grants for recovery from high dollar major storms.

WHY WE LIKE IT

Rural communities depend on their electric co-ops to power their local businesses, homes, and critical infrastructure. Electric co-ops shouldn’t have to jeopardize their non-profit status in order to receive disaster assistance that allows them to reliably serve customers.
