This bill would amend the deadline for applying to FEMA’s Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) to match the deadline for FEMA’s Individuals and Household Program (IHP) when both have been made available for disaster survivors.

WHY WE LIKE IT

FEMA DUA offers unemployment benefits for individuals who have become unemployed as a direct result of a declared major disaster and are not eligible for regular Unemployment Compensation. DUA’s application deadline is 30 days after the program is approved. The bill would change DUA’s application deadline to align it with FEMA IHP, another major program where eligible survivors can receive direct financial assistance for housing and other needs, which has an application deadline of 60 days.

AFCA supports efforts to simplify and streamline federal disaster programs. Aligning application deadlines for FEMA’s DUA and IHP programs is a simple step to support survivors as they navigate various federal resources.
